WHY YOU NEED TO STOP TRYING TO SELL CLOTHES ON DEPOP
Apps That You Actually Will Make Money From By Selling Clothes
I'm your typical college student...always trying to find ways to make a few extra dollars where I can. Upcycling has just been so big recently and canceling fast fashion. The whole idea of going thrifting is pretty normalized in this new day in age. Therefore, this is a perfect time where if you want to sell clothes you can! I feel as if Depop is widely known and accepted when it comes to selling clothes. I've been trying to sell on Depop for YEARS and have had zero success. I've watched endless Youtube on how to be successful on Depop, yet I have not sold a single item. Nothing is worst than when Depop sends me that email saying that my item is about to expire. I feel that Depop is best for like fashion creators compared to your average Joe's (aka me). The thing is I have really good items, relatively new, barely worn cute, trendy items! (Plus, I have this problem where I don't like wearing clothes after I post Instagram pictures in it...send help...I know I have it BAD.) So, I was like let me go try some other apps and places. In this post, I will be giving you the sites and tips on how to sell fast!
1. Poshmark
- Posh Parties: These parties can range from shoes to luxury items. Posting in these parties brings your page a lot of traction plus makes the item in the party typically will sell.
- "NWT" Label: I love this feature because it makes the item stand out even more on your page.
- Community: I feel the community on Poshmark is super nice. It's very easy to get a lot of followers on this site. Plus, people will come onto your page and share your listing and in return, you will share their listing.
- Aesthetically: This app is not in my opinion aesthetically pleasing. I find this app kind of annoying to be on after a while because the app does not match the modern-day aesthetics of apps.
- Notifications: It's important to have notifications on so you can respond instantly to any potential buyer. Poshmark sends at least 15 notifications today on random stuff. It's pretty annoying. An example notification "Feeling sad? Nothing like retail therapy". Just randomly throughout your day.
- Patience: It took me a while to sell my first item (not Depop long but long).
- Simple To Use: When I first downloaded this app, there was ZERO confusion on how to operate it. Very easy and simple which I enjoyed.
- Smart Pricing: This is a feature where if you are having a hard time selling an item you can turn it on and it will reduce the price. The way this works is that for any item over $9 you can set a minimum price that someone is allowed to purchase the item. For example, I'm selling a shirt for $15 and I pick $12 as the lowest price I would sell the shirt. The app will show your item to different consumers and gradually bring the price down to $12. Once it hits $12, smart pricing will be turned off and the shirt goes back to being $15.Suggested Prices: This is actually the best feature. You don’t have to sit there and guesstimate a price anymore! Mercari will find items just like yours and show you prices that sellers used.
- Seller Badges: You can earn different badges based on your behavior on the app. Badges include "Fast Responder" and "Quick Shipper"
- Views: I love that this app tells you how many people viewed your item. In a way, it makes you not feel like you are just posting and no one sees it. Giving you a little courage that someone will your items.
- Fees: Mercari takes 10% of the profit that you receive. That's a lot and you feel it too!
- Reviews: Once you ship the item, you do not receive the funds automatically. You have to wait till the buyer receives the item AND writes a review. Generally, UPS takes 3-4 days to ship and the buyer has up to 3 days to write a review. Therefore, you could be waiting for a hot second before receiving that money.
1. Style Your Item
Think about it like this, when you go into Forever 21, they have mannequins around the store of items already styles so you can mimic the style. The same thing goes for here. Some items might be self-explanatory but help the potential buyer visualize how they can style your item. Just posting the picture of the hanger is so unenthusiastic! Let potential buyers know you are serious!
2. Reasonable Prices
I know this is a hard pill to swallow but it’s hard to resell an item and expect more money than you paid. Look at similar items of what you plan to sell and see the prices that they set for those items. This way you can be in the same ballpark and have a chance of selling the item.
3. Mix Brand Items
InThis might just be my most useful tip. I noticed more followers and traction on my page with this tip. First, post your basic items. For me, that would be crop tops. Then after a few basic posts hit them with a Nike hoodie. People will go to your page because they want to see if you have items like that and might find other items they are interested in. Don’t just post all your brand stuff together, spread it out!
4. “Slow and Steady Wins The Race”
I learned that when you post just about 2-3 items a day you will have better luck then posting 10 items in one day. When you post all the items you have no reason to check in on the app unless you get a notification. Being consistent on the app makes people want to follow you because they are excited about what you are going to post next. I still do recommend when you are in the mood to try all those clothes and take pictures, most definitely do it, just don’t upload all of them onto the selling app at one time!
5. PATIENCE IS KEY
You have to have patience with being a seller. Your items will do the talking for you. It's very easy to get discouraged, I know I’ve been there. Yet, consistently posting and being active will increase the chances of your items selling.
Conclusion
These are the apps that I use and have found some success. These are tips that helped me make a few extra bucks. I hope I was able to help in some form!
Love,
Nia
